If you thought Montauk was only about water sports think again. One of the top public golf courses in the USA, the Montauk Downs, attracts golfers from around the country. We have two stables that offer horseback riding, public tennis courts, a skateboard park, and sponsor four triathlons each year.

At The Montauk Downs

This 18-hole public golf course is open all year, weather permitting, with a $43 fee on weekdays, $48 on weekends (from Memorial Day through Labor Day; out-of-state residents pay $86 on weekdays and $96 on weekends). Also a special twilight rate. Senior discount available on weekdays only. Tee times are from sunrise to sunset and therefore vary throughout the year. Also offering a driving range, putting green, a pro shop, which offers private lessons and clinics for adults and kids, and a grill room open for breakfast and lunch.

Urban Golf Academy -- Children's Golf Instruction At The Montauk Downs

Kate Tempesta's Urban Golf Academy is a unique program that introduces children to the game of golf as early as age four.    Kate Tempesta, Founder, Partner and President, is a member of the LPGA T&CP and the Director of the Junior Golf Program at Montauk Downs, and has been named one of the top golf teachers in New York State by Golf Digest in 2013.
UGA runs a day camp for junior golfers ages 4 and up from 9:15 am to 2:15 every day that includes golf, free swim and the option for tennis Mondays through Fridays. Create your own schedule. For golfers ages 8 and up, UGA runs an evening clinic on Mondays & Wednesdays or Tuesdays & Thursdays where golfers will improve their skills in a clinic setting for one hour and then head to the course to use those skills.  For more information visit or call Matt at 607-731-1886.

Horseback Riding

Deep Hollow Ranch

Montauk Downs State Park

Maintains six Har–Tru courts renting for $23 per hour, $13 for seniors. A pro shop offers private lessons and clinics for adults and children from mid-May through mid-September. Call 631-668-6264

Bring your own bike or rent one and take a leisurely tour of Montauk where wide side lanes make bicycling particularly enjoyable. The most popular ride is to the Point, a distance of about five miles from the Village. Along the way you can take your bike to Camp Hero State Park where roads curve through wooded areas passing W.W. II buildings. Take a three mile detour to Montauk Harbor on West Lake Drive, an easy route with wide shoulders and no hills. 
Mountain bikers can enjoy scenic rides over thousands of acres of parkland for the best mountain biking on Long Island. Bike trails in Hither Woods such as Talkhouse Trail and Serpent’s Back offer several levels of difficulty.

Running And Hiking

Running and speed walking are popular throughout the year. Over 5,000 acres of public beaches and parkland provide ample opportunity for long nature walks. The Montauk Bike Shop has information on organized runs. See our Trail's Section for more information on hiking trails.


In 1983, a local Montauk motel owner, fisherman, and surfer, Robert Aaron staged one of the first triathlons, "The Mighty Montauk". The popular "Robert Aaron Memorial Mighty Montauk Triathlon" is held every June. Montauk is a perfect place for a triathlon, and several others follow, the Sprint Triathlon held in July, and the internationally renowned triathlon weekend held in September; the Sprint Mighty Man on Saturday followed by the Mighty Man 1/2 distance and Might Man Olympic on Sunday. Skate Park near the Village on Essex Street, a supervised park for skateboarders, is open from 9 am to dusk in season. Air & Speed Surfshop in the Village can set you up with boards and gear 631-668-0356


One at the Montauk Public School, entry on Second House Road, one in the Village at Hank Zebrowski Park (Lion's Field), and one in the Village corner of Essex Street and Montauk Highway, keep the young ones busy. Hither Hills State Park and the Montauk Community Church also have playgrounds.
